Assisted Living Rates Increase Nationally by 5%

February 4, 2011

Base rates for assisted living communities increased by 5.2 percent nationally in 2010, according to an annual market survey released in Oct. 2010 by the MetLife Mature Market Institute. The monthly rate for a one-bedroom apartment or private room with private bath rose from $3,131 in 2009 to $3,293 in 2010, according to the survey. Arkansas reported the lowest average monthly rate ($2,073) while Washington, D.C., had the highest average rate ($5,231). The monthly base rate for a private room with private bath at Capital Manor's Residential Care Facility is $2,744.

Just over two-thirds (68%) of the assisted living communities surveyed by MetLife provide Alzheimer’s and dementia care for residents. Half (49%) of those communities charge an additional fee for this service. The national average monthly base rate for Alzheimer’s and dementia care is $4,762, up from $4,435 in 2009. Capital Manor opened their Memory Care in June 2010. The monthly rates range from $1,352 to $3,201.

Nine percent of assisted living communities participating in the 2010 survey were categorized as “basic,” meaning that their base rate includes five or fewer services. A majority (61%) of the 2010 communities were described as “standard” because they include six-to-nine services in the base rate. Thirty percent of communities were characterized as “inclusive” because 10 or more services are included in their base rates. Capital Manor provides three meals a day, laundry and housekeeping services, activities, scheduled transportation and four levels of care to meet the varying needs of its residents.

Comparisons with 2009 showed an 8% increase in the number of inclusive communities and a five-percent decrease in basic communities. The percentage of standard communities remained stable. Since 2009, monthly base rates have increased by 11% in basic communities, while rates in standard communities rose by three percent. Inclusive base rates increased by less than 1% between 2009 and 2010.
